Salt chlorine generators that make a pool's sanitizer automatically. A salt system, or salt chlorine generator, lets a pool produce its own chlorine from dissolved salt, for softer-feeling water and far less chemical handling. These reviews and buyer's guide cover the salt systems worth considering, and explain the salt-versus-chlorine question honestly.

This guide explains what genuinely matters when choosing salt systems & chlorinators, and our reviews below cover the specific products worth considering. Every review is an honest, independent editorial assessment from the WETYR Pools team.
The most common misunderstanding in pool ownership is the idea that saltwater and chlorine are two different ways to sanitize a pool. They are not. A saltwater pool is a chlorine pool. It is sanitized by chlorine, exactly like a traditional pool. The difference is only in how the chlorine gets into the water.
In a traditional chlorine pool, an owner or a service adds chlorine by hand, as tablets, liquid, or granular shock. In a saltwater pool, a modest amount of salt is dissolved in the water, and a device called a salt chlorine generator passes that salty water across an electrified cell that converts the salt into chlorine, automatically and continuously. The chlorine then does its normal sanitizing job, and as it is used up it largely reverts toward salt, so the cycle partly sustains itself. The honest description of a saltwater pool is simple: it is a chlorine pool that makes its own chlorine.

Salt systems are popular because the advantages are real. The water has a softer, silkier feel, and because chlorine is generated steadily rather than dosed in spikes, it tends to be gentler on skin and eyes, with less of the harsh chemical smell. Sanitation is more stable, because the generator produces chlorine continuously while the pump runs rather than in the peaks and troughs of manual dosing.
And there is far less chemical handling. With chlorine generated on site, an owner does much less buying, hauling, storing, and handling of chlorine products. For many owners that convenience alone is the reason to convert. What a salt system does not do is eliminate maintenance: the rest of the chemistry still needs balancing, and the salt cell needs care. A salt system automates one chore; it does not make a pool maintenance-free.
When comparing salt systems, the central component is the salt cell, the part that actually converts salt to chlorine. Look at the cell's rated chlorine output relative to your pool size, its expected service life, and how easy it is to inspect and clean, because a cell scales up over time and needs periodic cleaning. Look also at the controller: a clear, capable controller, ideally one that integrates with pool automation, makes the system far easier to live with.
Ecosystem fit matters too. A salt system from the same brand as the pool's automation integrates most smoothly. And the system must be sized correctly to the pool, which, with the assessment of the pool's finish and hardware that a responsible salt conversion requires, is a strong reason to have a salt system specified and installed by a professional.
WETYR Pools converts traditional pools to salt, and installs and services salt systems, as part of our salt system conversion and equipment work. A responsible conversion starts by assessing the pool's finish, fittings, and hardware, then sizing and installing the right generator and balancing the system. We also service existing salt systems, cleaning and replacing cells and keeping output correctly tuned, so whichever path you choose, the system works as it should.
